Ashiya International School
first quarter
Welcome to the 2006-2007 school year! The good news is that on July 20th, Hyogo Prefecture approved Ashiya International School as the 14th foreign school in the prefecture, the first to be approved in 10 years.
Before kicking off the new school year, I was searching for a school-wide focus for the year.
I feel that many of the problems and accidents that occur around us today could have been prevented if people were properly disciplined.
We usually see a shepherd holding a staff shaped like the one in the picture. Do you know why one end of a shepherd's staff is shaped like a hook?
One reason was that if a sheep repeatedly ran away and separated from the herd, the shepherd took the hook-end of the staff to pull its neck or leg. This way, the sheep would not be able to run away and would learn not to go astray.

A shepherd's duty is to look over the safety and nurture sheep. We as parents and educators have a similar duty. In order for our children to walk down the right path and to be wise, how should we grasp and use the staff of discipline to lovingly provide guidance.
My goal for all of us this school year is to become better parents and educators through "discipline". I have chosen one verse to focus on this year, which is in the right column of this page. I look forward to learning and growing together with you.

しつけのつえ
2006-2007年の新学期が始まりました！良いお知らせがあります。7月20日に兵庫県の教育課が芦屋インターナショナルスクールの学校法人申請を認可しました！外国人各種学校の認可は兵庫県で１４校目に当たり、実に１０年ぶりです。新学期の学校のテーマを探していました。周りで起きている多くの事故、事件は正しいしつけさえなされていれば、起こらなかったかも知れません。
羊飼いは上の写真の形のつえを持っています。なぜ先は丸い形をしているのかご存知でしょうか。それは群れから何度もはなれる羊の首や足を引っかけるためだそうです。そうやって羊が今後、群れから離れて行かないように教える為のしつけです。
羊飼いの役目は羊を養い、安全を見守ることです。親、教育者も同じ様な役目があります。愛をもったしつけをするために私たちはどの様にしつけのつえを握り、しなければいけない事は何か、考えて頂きたい。子供が正しい道を歩み、知恵を得るために。
今年度は「しつけ」と言うテーマを通してより良い親、教育者に成長する一年にして行きたいと思います。そのため、今年度の聖句をひとつ選び（表紙の右上）、共に学んで行きたいと願っています。
