paradigm shift

values of church:

  • relationship
  • community

global paradigm shift:

post modernism

belief vs. belonging: the trend has moved from belief-based thinking to belonging-based motivation, in japan there is more acceptance of this shift than in the west, and mainly in the younger generation

failure of the institution: in the past few years a growing distrust of institutions such as churches, leaders, governments, companies, education and financial institutions has characterized the thinking of the younger generation

the church today tends to expect people to clean up, dress nice, deal with their problems and THEN come to church...Jesus' example with zaccheus was to hang out with him where he was, fully connecting human to human, and work out the rest as he went

we need to ask God to show us how He sees the people we meet and not engage them based on our perceptions and worldview

our speech, thoughts, and actions should mirror Jesus, not ourselves, our culture, or our prejudices

Jesus sends out the 72 (luke 10):

we tend to attempt to build a base on preaching, and specifically preaching on sin management
Jesus sends us out with a different model which is based on relationship and helping people in need and preaching the kingdom

Jesus instruct His followers how to go:
(matthew 28)

in the original greek manuscripts, the translation is "as you are going, make disciples..." which implies that we are already going, already in action, and making disciples is part of the journey, everyday, right now, and "...of all people groups" which means not only nations, but cultures, sub-cultures, and any group of people we encounter along the way

discipleship: being a student of Jesus

"as you are going, make students of all people groups..."
